Ever wonder what buckskin is and how it’s made? Buckskin has been used for centuries to craft beautiful and durable garments as well as functional useful gear that is built to last. In this hands-on workshop with longtime instructor and dedicated craftsperson Rain Hall, you’ll learn the essentials of working with soft, durable buckskin while creating your very own handmade pouch to take home. Like carving a spoon in woodworking, sewing a buckskin bag is a foundational skill, one that builds both confidence and creativity.
Together we’ll explore:
Each participant will leave with a one-of-a-kind buckskin hip / belt pouch or tiny treasure bag, crafted from naturally tanned deer hide in a range of beautiful shades and textures. Along the way, you’ll gain the skills to continue working with hides, plus the confidence to cut, lace, and stitch your own creations.
Beyond the techniques, this workshop offers the chance to slow down, use your hands, and connect: with each other, yourself, and the natural world. Rain brings a spirit of wild freedom and uninhibited creativity to the process, encouraging each pouch to reflect its maker. The joy of watching your project come together is matched only by the satisfaction of leaving with something that you’ve crafted with your own two hands.
This class will be held indoors on Saturday, January 24th, 2026, from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm in Asheville, NC.
This class is suitable for all skills levels! The minimum age is 13 accompanied by an adult or 16 unaccompanied. Moderate hand strength and dexterity is needed for this class.
Rain Hall is a homesteader and feral child wrangler nestled in the heart of Piedmont, NC. Some years ago she was taken with what we call ” Hide Fever ” and has been tanning deerskins into buckskins ever since. For Rain, hide fever spread into a love for creative buckskin sewing, crafts, and garments. Her favorite way of connecting with her ancestors and the spirits that be are processing animals for meat and hides, tanning hides, picking berries, and tending the little wild ones as one tends a small delicate fire.

Lily is an artist, creator, and dreamer. Since a very young age, she has been immersed in the natural world and draws heavy inspiration from the wild. Though her medium changes frequently, Lily’s art and expression always incorporate an element of the organic and unpredictable. She got her associate in fine arts in 2023, and now volunteers at her school as a ceramic studio monitor. She hopes to open a studio of her own one day to have a place to teach and inspire others. In addition to doing commission work, Lily has been creating many graphics for The Firefly Gathering since 2019. Lily grew up in the Earthskills community from the time she was eight years old, so having the opportunity to grow and give back in so many ways has been incredibly fulfilling. No matter where she ends up, this group of people and ideas will always hold a special place in her heart.
