About the Workshop: Buckskin Sewing- Tiny Treasures Bag
The little things in life can bring us some of the greatest joys. If you find yourself collecting lucky dice, coins, buttons, rocks, crystals, or other special trinkets with a passion, why not take your collection to the next level? Join practical crafting and hide-tanning expert Rain Hall to design and sew your very own buckskin drawstring bag to keep your especially small somethings somewhere truly special!
Buckskin is a specific type of natural hide tanning process. The finished material is softer and has more stretchy tendencies than true leather, making it perfect for such a small, soft design. Buckskin also has a distinct campfire-like smell from the process of “smoking the hide”, which will give your treasures a truly beautiful and unique home. By using our hands and working with tanned animal skins to craft something useful and beautiful, we grow our connection to the natural world that sustains us. Deer hides and other animal skins and hides are often seen as byproducts and discarded. In celebrating the potential of hides tanned and all their uses, we can see past this waste culture and offer a different narrative – even in the smallest things.
Get ready to learn all about crafting with buckskin, practice creating your own design, and sew your new pouch alongside a group of fellow tiny-treasure enthusiasts! In this workshop, we will:
- Get to know buckskin. What is it? How is it made, and how do we use it to make cool crafty things?
- Learn basic patterning skills and how they apply to the unique fiber of hides- Patterns provided, or design your own!
- Cut thong for buckskin lacing
- Learn hows and whys of awl use
- Cover the applications of various stitches, including: running stitch, whip stitch, and X stitch
All Buckskin used for class is deer skin, brain tan style and processed by the instructor.
This class will be held indoors on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm near Asheville, NC.
All skill levels welcome! Some strength and dexterity of the hands is needed for this class. The minimum age is 16 with an accompanying paid adult.
About the Instructor: Rain Hall
Rain Hall (she/they) is a radical parent with passions for camp life, subsistence food gathering/preserving, and freedom of creative expression for practical crafts.

In order to make our workshops more accessible, we offer two price options for each class, with an additional Equity Discount for qualifying individuals. Please consider these options and select your price at checkout.
- Sponsor Price $115: For those who have enough to share, thank you for being a Sponsor. This is an opportunity to contribute towards the cost of the class for someone else.
- Standard Price $90: The Standard reflects one person’s share of what it costs to produce the class and cover basic expenses.
- Equity Discount $65: We offer an additional Equity Discount for those from the following communities who support reparations and/or an equitable redistribution of wealth and would not have access to this workshop without this discount:
