Join The Firefly Gathering and Matty of The Asheville ReCyclery for an ongoing interactive series of classes geared towards empowering participants to be less fossil fuel dependent and more capable of maintaining and repairing their own self-driven modes of transportation: their bicycles! Each workshop in our Bike Clinic series will focus on a different aspect of bicycle maintenance and repair.
Basic Bike Maintenance: (March 27) We’ll discuss flat repair, proper lubrication, full pre-ride safety check, including brakes, derailleurs, torque specs and proper bicycle sizing. Click here to for more details.
Brake Overhaul: (Register Below) How to make your bike stop! We will discuss different brake assemblies and how to set them up and maintain them.
Shifting Overhaul: (May 15) Because we live in the mountains! We’ll discuss different shifting assemblies and how to set them up and maintain them. Click here for more details.
The workshop will be held from 2:00 – 5:30pm on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the ReCyclery in Asheville, NC. There is work space both indoors and outdoors. There are 10 stands for students to use, and the class is limited to 10 students, so bring your bike! All parts purchased through the bike shop will be in addition to the class fees, so bring cash to purchase tools or gear from the ReCyclery.
Who is this for: This class is for all skill levels. We begin explaining/ demonstrating at entry level then expand on the theories/ practices to an in depth completion. Experienced mechanics/ tinkerers know that new knowledge can always be gleaned from other’s approaches. Minimum age for students is 7.
There are only 10 spots in this class, so register early.
With 30 years of cycling experience born out of mountain biking and honed over ten years as a bike messenger in Canada, Matty (he/him) prefers to live life on two wheels. He has toured both the U.S. and Canada by bike, encountering and welcoming the unexpected around every bend. As a professional bike mechanic, he co-runs a community non- profit teaching bike shop in Asheville, N.C. and is a League Of American Cyclists Certified Instructor of bicycle safety. He helps run Asheville On Bikes’ Bike Club program, teaching middle school youth road safety and confidence. Matty believes there is no day throughout the year that bikes can’t get us where we want to go.
