About the Workshop: Animal Kin Connection- Deer Bone Whistles
Bone has met the material needs for peoples the world over since time immemorial. Harder and sharper than wood, less brittle than stone, this often overlooked gift from our animal kin provides a doorway to connection to the natural world. As we work with bone, we deepen our understanding of animal bodies and how they relate to our own. During this class, students will clean, shape and polish deer phalanges into beautiful, functional whistles, replicating historical artifacts found across the globe.
In this workshop, participants will learn:
- Deer anatomy in relation to human anatomy
- The foundations of working with bone including sourcing and processing
- Basics of scrimshaw, a way of marking and decorating bone
- Examples of other bone projects to inspire future creativity and exploration of the craft
This class will be held outdoors in a covered pavilion on Saturday August 10, 2024, from 10 am – 2 pm near Asheville, NC.
This class is suitable for all skill levels. The minimum age is 12 with adult.
About the Instructor: Josh Barnwell
For over 20 years Josh Barnwell (he/they) has been inspired by the natural world and the ways it has provided material needs for humanity the world over. He spends his time in Tennessee with his feral family, pursuing cyclical, seasonal, nature inspired crafts and leading workshops from his farmstead and at earthskills gatherings around the east coast.

In order to make our workshops more accessible, we offer two price options for each class, with an additional Equity Discount for qualifying individuals. Please consider these options and select your price at checkout.
- Sponsor Price $100: For those who have enough to share, thank you for being a Sponsor. This is an opportunity to contribute towards the cost of the class for someone else.
- Standard Price $70: The Standard reflects one person’s share of what it costs to produce the class and cover basic expenses.
- Equity Discount $45: We offer an additional Equity Discount for those from the following communities who support reparations and/or an equitable redistribution of wealth and would not have access to this workshop without this discount:
- Indigenous or Native American, Black, Latino/a/x
- Other peoples of the global majority, or racialized communities
