Description
•Title: “Naked as the Swallowing Dark” by Arulu, in collaboration with Madison Moore and Ka
•Medium: Watercolor, ink, colored pencil, & felt marker on heavyweight watercolor paper.
•Dimensions: 25” x 40”
•Info: “This painting is inspired by a dream in which I encountered a mighty black bear spirit who implored us humans to take responsibility for the violence of our complicity in our destructive lifestyles. ‘We can’t care for ourselves the way we were made to anymore.’ He reminded us that prayerfully making generous offerings to earth is a way to begin mending broken trust with the animate natural world. After giving the bear blueberries & tobacco, & kneeling in the spirits’ shrine, he gave me three green-gold apples from the half-gnawed piles strewn across the floor of the bear temple. ‘Feed your kin. We need you to remember what it is to be human & to wear your skins with honor. For in the end, you will be as naked as the swallowing dark.’ “
