Colors fill our visual landscape. Sunny yellows, olive greens, magentas, indigos, purples, more than one can imagine. This class will teach you the alchemical magic that peoples around the world have been using for ages upon ages.

Students will learn which plants extract the best colors on different fabrics, where to find them, what parts of the plants to use and how to use plant components and metals to adhere pigments for lasting vibrancy.

We will have 3 different dye pots in which we will dye silk ribbon and cotton lace for students to take home. We will go on a plant walk, identify dye plants, and talk about which plants you can grow in your own garden.

Workshop Details

The class will be held at an outdoor location on Saturday May 14, 2022 in Barnardsville, NC. The class will be hands on with some walking and foraging of plants. We’ll take a half hour break for lunch, so please bring a bagged lunch.

This class is for beginners. Minimum age is 12 with adult.

About the Instructor

Lindsey Warf (she/her) is a massage therapist and new momma who has been homesteading and crafting since 2008 when she realized that being a normal upstanding member of society wasn’t her path. She realized that after busting booty to get a college degree, she still didn’t know a darned thing about how to sustain herself. She went on a mission to understand growing and preserving food, animal husbandry, plant identification, herbalism, fiber arts, natural dyes and on and on.

From 2010-2015 Lindsey jumped into the local fiber scene, felting, using plant dyes and teaching natural dye classes. She taught at venues such as the Firefly Gathering, Villagers Homesteading Store, and the Organic Growers School. In 2017, she took a trip to Guatemala where she learned dye techniques and backstrap weaving of the Mayan women in the region. Currently, life is full as new working momma on the land and Lindsey finds time here and there to make beautiful things and feed her creative spirit

Lily Harlin

Bookkeeper

Lily is an artist, creator, and dreamer. Since a very young age, she has been immersed in the natural world and draws heavy inspiration from the wild. Though her medium changes frequently, Lily’s art and expression always incorporate an element of the organic and unpredictable. She got her associate in fine arts in 2023, and now volunteers at her school as a ceramic studio monitor. She hopes to open a studio of her own one day to have a place to teach and inspire others. In addition to doing commission work, Lily has been creating many graphics for The Firefly Gathering since 2019. Lily grew up in the Earthskills community from the time she was eight years old, so having the opportunity to grow and give back in so many ways has been incredibly fulfilling. No matter where she ends up, this group of people and ideas will always hold a special place in her heart.
