DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop: Animal Kin Connection- Deer Bone Whistles\n\n\n\nBone has met the material needs for peoples the world over since time immemorial. Harder and sharper than wood\, less brittle than stone\, this often overlooked gift from our animal kin provides a doorway to connection to the natural world.  As we work with bone\, we deepen our understanding of animal bodies and how they relate to our own. During this class\, students will clean\, shape and polish deer phalanges into beautiful\, functional whistles\, replicating historical artifacts found across the globe. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn: \n\n\n\n\nDeer anatomy in relation to human anatomy\n\n\n\nThe foundations of working with bone including sourcing and processing \n\n\n\nBasics of scrimshaw\, a way of marking and decorating bone\n\n\n\nExamples of other bone projects to inspire future creativity and exploration of the craft\n\n\n\n\nThis class will be held outdoors in a covered pavilion on Saturday August 10\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm near Asheville\, NC. \n\n\n\nThis class is suitable for all skill levels. Minimum age is 13 with adult. \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor: Luke Cannon\nMore than a botanist\, Luke Cannon is a long time pursuer and teacher of our astounding natural world.  Over the last two decades\, Luke has instructed numerous wilderness awareness programs and led hundreds of classes\, walks and workshops. An avid naturalist\, he blends biological studies with ecology\, animism\, permaculture\, survival skills\, rural homesteading\, and experiential education. He has taught for the North Carolina Arboretum\, the Blue Ridge Audubon Society\, Organic Growers School\, the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society\, the Asheville Mushroom Club\, Wild Abundance\, and the Appalachian School of Holistic Herbalism to name a few. In 2011 he founded Astounding Earth – dedicated to helping people deepen their relationships with the our living planet. Luke currently lives in the mountains of North Carolina studying\, teaching and living Appalachian Ecology and Animism. Sign up for the waitlist below:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Spoon Carving Workshop\n\n\n\nJoin beloved Firefly Gathering elder Barron Brown as he walks students of all experience levels down the path of carving a beautiful and functional spoon!  \n\n\n\nIn this class\, Barron will cover: \n\n\n\n\nThe qualities of wood and how they behave as utensils\n\n\n\nAn introduction to basic carving tools (gauges\, knives\, sand paper) \n\n\n\nTool safety\n\n\n\nThe art and finesse of creating the bowl of the spoon with a gouge \n\n\n\nCarving handles\n\n\n\nHow to achieve a smooth and polished finish \n\n\n\n\nMost participants will finish their spoons\, but some may only get to the point where it can be finished at home. All students will have the opportunity to take home additional materials for future carving! \n\n\n\nSpoon Carving Workshop Details\n\n\n\nThis class will be held indoors on Saturday February 3\, 2024 from 1 pm – 5 pm near Asheville\, NC. \n\n\n\nThis class is for all levels. He learned timber framing\, post-and-beam construction\, log cabin construction\, and much more from his grandparents when he was a child and teenager. He currently works as a sculptor\, welder and builder\, as well as teaching carving\, blacksmithing\, and building. Barron is a joy to learn from\, as he weaves   together his many talents with deep intelligence and his great ability to explain concepts to anyone. Barron has taught at Firefly since its beginning\, and has been an instructor with the Earthskills Rendezvous for more than 20 years. And how do we use it to make everyday garments and useful items that can last  a lifetime? Join our beloved Annual Gathering instructor\, Rain Hall\, to learn the basic skills for crafting with buckskin. Minimum age is 13\, participants under 16 need an adult. \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor Rain Hall\n\n\n\nRain Hall is a homesteader and feral child wrangler nestled in the heart of Piedmont\, NC.  Some years ago she was taken with what we call ” Hide Fever ” and has been tanning deerskins into buckskins ever since.  For Rain\, hide fever spread into a love for creative buckskin sewing\, crafts\, and garments. SUMMARY:How to Butcher at Home w/ Grant Adkisson
DESCRIPTION:How to Butcher at Home Details\n\n\n\nLearn how to butcher large animals at your own home or farmstead! Utilizing simple tools and techniques\, instructor Grant Adkisson will guide participants in a hands-on experience butchering a whole hog raised on his farm.  Home butchering is an empowering skill that ensures every ounce of an animal goes to good use\, is a cost effective way to ensure access to high quality meat\, and builds deeper relationships with what nourishes you. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will: \n\n\n\n\nGet oriented to the tools and techniques used to safely take a pig\, deer\, goat\, lamb\, or even cow from the field to the freezer\n\n\n\nWe will discuss safety\, sanitary practices\, knife/saw techniques and how to safely handle our harvest at home\n\n\n\nDiscuss the basics of humane unlifing methods\, site and planning. (NOTE: we will NOT be unlifing during class)\n\n\n\nDiscuss scraping\, scalding\, and skinning of the animal\n\n\n\nBreak down a whole hog into “primals\,” then final cuts to be cured\, ground\, cooked\, or frozen for later use\n\n\n\nLearn basic butcher cuts\, including how to make chops\, ribs\, roasts\, and how to properly wrap for freezer storage\n\n\n\nOrient to the basic methods of meat preservation like salting\, canning\, freezing and smoking and the basic principles of charcuterie.\n\n\n\nDiscuss ideal weather and time of year for processing and inexpensive work methods to ensure your harvest is successful even if the temps are high\n\n\n\nDiscuss the uses of by-products like leaf lard\, back fat\, ham hock\, fried pig skin (chicharone)\, as well as how to make use of the offal (organs) for other applications\n\n\n\n\nPlease note:  Because this class is focused on home butchering (rather than commercial)\, and in compliance with NC regulations regarding animal processing\, all meat will remain at the instructor’s farm at the end of the day.  Information will be shared in the class about acquiring high-quality meat from local resources. \n\n\n\nTime & Location\n\n\n\nThis class will be held both outdoors and indoors on Saturday December 2\, 2023 from 9am – 4:30pm in Mars Hill\, NC.  \n\n\n\nThis class is for good for all skill levels\, but will be especially useful for anyone interested in harvesting their own animals and processing them. Minimum age is 12 with adult. Bring a bagged lunch and wear layers in case it’s chilly outside.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor: Grant Adkisson (he/him)\n\n\n\nGrant Adkisson (he/him) has been working with Earthskills events and schools for almost 13 years as staff or instructor and has a broad background including Livestock Farming\, Organic Gardening\, Charcuterie\, Cooking\, Hunting\, Fishing\, Archery\, Wild Crafting\, Blacksmithing\, Martial Arts\, Wilderness Medicine\, Body Work\, Mead Making and a host of other skills and interests.  Grant is inspired by helping others to gain new skills and capabilities and strives to be a better craftsman and teacher in the process. You really don’t know a subject until you can effectively answer tough questions from a student about it! Grant has been hunting and processing deer and small game for 16 years and raising his own sheep\, goats\, pigs and cows for the last 5-6 years.
