Scything 101 With Johnny Baer
Step into the future by way of the past and learn how to utilize one of the most powerful tools on the farmstead: the scythe.
In this course Johnny Baer will guide you through the basics of scything, including an overview of the tool, body mechanics of scything, tool maintenance, haymaking, foraging, orcharding, and gardening with a scythe.
Scything 101 Workshop Details
The workshop will be held on Sunday, October 10 from 9am – 2pm in Elk Park, NC. The farm is located 30 miles west of Boone, NC and is located along a river, so we may extend the class to include swimming/foraging afterwards if weather permits!
The morning will start with basic theory, set up, and a brief description of a few applications of the scythe on the homestead. We will then use the scythe on orchards/gardens. We will then learn how to care for the tool and and practice how to make replacement handles. Discussions will also include detailed applications of the scythe in the orchard and gardens. The day will conclude with hay making and reflections.
