A World of Delicious Acorns w/ Frea Forager

October 26 @ 11:00 am 2:00 pm

Acorn Processing WP 1920 x 1080

About the Workshop: A World of Delicious Acorns

In both rural and urban areas, acorns are one of the most abundant wild foods that we have access to, yet many people have no idea how to work with acorns, or how incredibly flavorful and amazing they taste!  In this workshop, join instructor Frea Forager to learn the entire process of how to successfully turn acorns into delicious human food.  You’ll then sample a delectable spread of white and red acorn foods lovingly harvested, processed and prepared by Frea for further flavor inspiration!

This workshop will cover:

  • The honorable harvest
  • Basics of oak identification
  • Different tools for harvesting
  • Best harvest practices
  • One thing that causes many people to lose their entire harvest
  • Ways to shell acorns
  • Sorting practices: what to keep and what to toss out
  • Three types of acorn leaching methods and the pros and cons of each method
  • Ways to preserve the harvest
  • Different kinds of foods to make with acorns

Menu includes:

  • Acorn/flax crackers and hummus
  • Savory acorn wraps with veggies
  • Acorn/black walnut muffins (Frea’s current favorite)
  • And of course, acorn cookies!

All foods contain stories and a connection to places and people, whether we know these stories and carry these connections and relationships within us or not.  To help you connect more deeply with the foods shared in class, Frea will be discussing some of her own personal journey understandings of settler colonialism, white supremacy, cultural appropriation, and the justice work she is now involved in as a white woman who forages.

*All foods will be gluten free and most will be vegan

** Fifteen percent of the materials fees from this class (included in the ticket price) will be donated to the Bigwitch Indian Wisdom Initiative.

This class will be held outdoors in a covered pavilion on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 11 am to 2 pm in Asheville, NC.

This class is suitable for anyone interested in learning to turn acorns into human food, though we will be going over technical details at some points that may not be interesting for folks under 15.

Lily is an artist, creator, and dreamer. Since a very young age, she has been immersed in the natural world and draws heavy inspiration from the wild. Though her medium changes frequently, Lily’s art and expression always incorporate an element of the organic and unpredictable. She got her associate in fine arts in 2023, and now volunteers at her school as a ceramic studio monitor. She hopes to open a studio of her own one day to have a place to teach and inspire others. In addition to doing commission work, Lily has been creating many graphics for The Firefly Gathering since 2019. Lily grew up in the Earthskills community from the time she was eight years old, so having the opportunity to grow and give back in so many ways has been incredibly fulfilling. No matter where she ends up, this group of people and ideas will always hold a special place in her heart.
